Most people think of time zones as 24 neat one-hour bands around the globe. In reality, there are 38 distinct offsets in active use, because many countries and territories use 30-minute or 15-minute offsets rather than whole hours. India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), Iran (UTC+3:30), and parts of Australia (UTC+9:30) are some of the most notable examples.
Geographically, China spans from approximately UTC+5 in the far west to UTC+9 in the east, a spread of five natural time zones. Yet the country officially uses one national time, UTC+8 (China Standard Time).
